Hello, I hope this steps bellow can help you with Asus M2A-VM

1) At BIOS change your sata controller mode to AHCI (I haven't tried RAID)

2) Install ESXi from a CD or USB drive following the installation instructions.

3) On the error message "Unable to find a supported device to write the VMware ESX Server 3i image to" hit Alt-F1

4) This will drop you at the command prompt. Login with user root and no password.

5) run the command vmkload_mod ahci (a small delay is normal)

6) Back at the console type install. Install will start, but may still have an error. At the error type Alt-F1 the login, run install, and Alt-f2 to accept.

Now you can see your SATA disks and sucessful install ESXi 3.5

Everything looks fine but after install ESXi won't boot. This is bacause the simple.map file inside installation image doesn't have the following line

1002:4380 0000:0000 storage ahci

Now you can choose: change this file inside vmware ISO/DD image before install or (the way I did it) change it after install (inside binmod.tgz on the correspondent partition) mounting the FAT filesystem in another linux OS.

The onboard Realtek NIC will also fail by but you can workaround it (see issues reported at viewtopic.php?f=6&t=81 )

In order to configure the r8168 NIC for ESXi do the following (once again, the way I did it)

1) Extract the file r8168.o from oem.tgz available at http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/customize_oem_tgz.php (support for Realtek 8168/8111C Ethernet adapter )

2) Put r8168.o in mod driver's folder inside binmod.tgz (mounted with help of other linux installation )

3) Add the following line

8168 0000:0000 network r8168

in the simple.map file, also inside binmod.tgz

4) Boot ESXi

Now you must have ESXi running at your Asus M2A-VM 690G SB600 SATA controller

Thanks for great tip.It worked like a charm.

Just want to let you know that I did try it with RAID0 and 1 (BIOS) and no luck. Esxi doesn't see setup.Shame, we probably need a better RAID card anyway.

ESX(i) drivers don't support software RAID controller like the Intel ICH or nVidia MCP models. The best you can do with those is individual disks.
