Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
Hello! So far I've gotten the 'installable' ESX Server 3i 3.5 U3 (is any of that redundant???) installed on a USB thumb drive. I have succeeded in customizing the installation to get a Realtek 8169 NIC and the onboard nVidia NIC working with some mods. I was able to get two VMs configured (even imported one with the Converter!) and working when I installed on an IDE drive for testing. But the IDE drive is small, noisy, and near death. I want to install the VMs on my SATA drive. However, when the SATA drive is plugged in to the mobo ESXi boots very slowly and sometimes hangs at sata_nv loading. If I can get booted and look at the storage adapters it will see the SATA bus as vmhba1 and vmhba33. If I recall correctly, it did see the actual drive at vmhba33. However if I try to use the drive at all by going to 'create storage' it will hang and timeout the management client. Now, this exact drive has been working fine in this computer under Ubuntu Server 8.0.4 LTS (with vmware server 2) so I don't think it's any hardware problem. So something is up with the driver I guess. Code: ~ # lspci -v 00:00.00 Host bridge Bridge: nVidia Corporation Class 0600: 10de:00e1

Could it be any bios settings for the drive (320 GB Seagate) I should change? Could the existing formatting of the drive be throwing it off somehow? I think it's ext2, not sure if it's MBR or something else. Thanks much.

Re: Ausu K8N system almost working - SATA problem
When you have the SATA drive connected and run fdisk -l at the console it is visible? Also if you run lspci -p is a module loaded for vmhba33?

The output of fdisk was also very slow to come up. Before this output I removed the SATA drive and made sure it was MBR partitioned all free space, so that's not the problem. Thank you very much for your help, Dave!

Re: Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
What BIOS options do you have to change the controller mode? With some Intel controllers you can change to Legacy / IDE mode and ESXi will load up another driver. It may be an issue with the sata_nv driver and that controller. The list shows what ESXi will recognize, but unfortunately some items don't work 100%. Update 4 was released tonight I would update ESXi to the latest patch to see if that helps - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Patch_ ... out_VC.php.

Re: Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
Hello! Well, a mildly painful update done (but I learned some things!) and the SATA still doesn't work, though at least now it's being seen as vmhba1:0 instead of that weird vmhba1:33 as before. Still, the boot is very slow and storage adapter viewing is slow and attempts to add a datastore on that drive cannot be completed. Here's how it looks now: Code: ~ # fdisk -l
Disk /dev/disks/vmhba1:0:0:0: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

I think my next step is to try it with the drive on a SATA to IDE adapter to the IDE bus (not using the sata bus). Performance doesn't have to be great... I'd just like it to work. Thanks.

Re: Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
You might want to try an install with ESXi 3.5 Update 4 (it just came out yesterday). The driver sata_nv has changed with the new release.

Re: Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
And you might want to check out this thread - http://communities.vmware.com/message/1213716#1213716. Seems someone tried an older version of the file to get around another issue. Have you tried regular ESX on the system?

Re: Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
Funny you should mention it... I did find that post today and tried it... I could see that my system did load the sata_nv_n.o (since it hangs so long there!) that I got from that post, but the problem is the same.
I don't know if I have access to "regular esx" with the free license... I don't feel like I'd want to go backwards though... I either have to buy a new PATA drive or try a SATA-PATA adapter. But I'm going to look a little more for another linux SATA driver to try...
Thanks!

Re: Asus K8N system almost working - SATA problem
One thing to keep in mind with ESXi drivers is that they have to be compiled specifically for the vmkernel. While some of the drivers come from Linux source, you can't just add any Linux driver and have it work.

I see! Thanks for that... probably saved me some time! I'm going to hang up my nv_sata search now...
