 install VMware ESX 3.5.0 on IBM x3400 M2 server RAID 5.
Hi All, After i setup RAID 5 for my server IBM X3400 M2. I got a problem when i install VMWare ESX server 3i 3.5.0. The error message is : "Unable to find a supported device to write the VMWare ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 image to." I has followed this guide carefuly : http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_i ... _drive.phpbut the error message still display again. In the end, i can't change to console mode (By ALT + F1). please help me. Thank you. -- Nobi

Is the console frozen (i.e. you can't press ALT+F1).
What sort of storage controller does the host have and what model of CPU (i.e. if it's 64 bit have you tried ESX(i) 4)?

Hi Dave,
Yeah. The second time I pressed ALT + F1, but console is frozen. The 1 st is okay.
More information : Storage : 4 x IBM 300GB 10K 6Gbps SAS SFF Slim Hot-Swap Processor : Intel® Xeon® Quad-Core Processor E5504 2.0GHz/800MHz 4.8GT 4MB L2 80W
It just happen when I change to RAID 5.

Have you tried ESXi 4.0?

Not yet, my project require on VMware 3.5.0. But i found that VMWare 3.5.0 can install on IBM x3400 M2 (7836) at http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/info/x86s ... mware.htmlMy VMWare version is ESX 3.5 Thank you,

Dear,
I tried with ESXi 4.1, but them same error still display. More information : After I added a RAID card : IBM ServeRAID M5015 SAS/SATA Controller, the error display. I think it not Compatible with VMWare Have any advice for me?

Can you press ALT+F1 to get to the console?

Yes, When I press ALT+F1. It change to console mode.

That's good. Could you login (root - password is blank) and then run fdisk -l?

hi Dave, I've just reboot and installed with ESXi 4.1 again. And now it can recognise my RAID card and install complete.  The 1st time, I installed with ESXi 3.5, and it display the error message. Then I run fdisk -l like you said, has nothing display on CLI. Maybe it is not compatible. Thanks a lot for your help.
