 Network Drivers on Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H

I've been struggling for the last couple of days to get ESXi installed on my machine which has a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboard.

I consistently get the error message "No network adapters were detected. Either no network adapters are physically connected to the system, or a suitable driver could not be located. A third party driver may be required."

The motherboard has an Atheros GbE LAN chip so I tried finding suitable drivers for this. After reading around, both on these forums and others I tried the following suggested solution.

I used ESXi customizer v2.7.1
to add the drivers: net-atl1e-
to the ESXi v5.1 ISO

I made the resulting custom ISO into a bootable USB drive using Rufus.

However, the result I got when trying the install was exactly the same.

I have various alternative combinations of this method including burning the ISO to a DVD rather than to a USB stick and using ESXi v5.0 but all with the same result / error message.

Can anyone offer some advice as to what I'm doing wrong please?
