Post Atheros 8161 PCIe LAN
Hello this is my first post - please go easy on me if I'm missing something completely obvious.

I've finished building a whitebox with an ASUS P8H77-V motherboard http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H77V/#specifications
It as an Atheros 8161 PCIe LAN onboard. I've followed through an tried using every vib I can find that is built for Atheros LAN and using the ESXi customiser at http://www.v-front.de/p/esxi-customizer.html but I am having no success at all.

Is there something I need to run from the ALT+F1 command line once the installer fails to install the LAN driver? How can I best get started with solving this problem?

I have generated a driver that covers some Atheros devices. If you can provide the PCI ID of your onboard NIC I will let you know whether the driver I have is likely to cover it. From the ALT-F1 screen if you do a lspci -v command and then look for the lines that mention your network card. It will be something like Class 0200: 1969:1083

Post Re: Atheros 8161 PCIe LAN
Greetings everyone!
I'd like to bump this one up as I have been in quite the same situation with the AR8161 for a while now.
After trying different technique (using the atl1c and atl1e that won't work of course), here is where I stand: I was able to use the source code to compile the alx driver (which seems to be the one that works for this adapter).
The alx successfully compile and works on some linux distro no problem (ubuntu for ex.). Now, in a Centos VM (v5), I configured the Open source code downloaded from VMWare so that I could compile the driver using the appropriate headers ...etc. When I use the vmkdrivers to build the alx driver though, I get all sort of error messages during compilation because of course I can't find (yet) the right switch to use in my cc command.
If anyone could help me building the appropriate command lines, I could build the driver and share with everyone.

Anyone up for the challenge? :P

Z

After reading your two AMAZING posts Dave, looks like my build script is missing the tricky vmklinux_module.c ... haha!
As soon as I can I will rewrite my build script and see what happens.
Thanks so much again and please keep writing your tutorial, this is more than valuable material!!! Amazing!
