Intel Pro/1000PT with Supermicro X8DTN+ and Intel E5620
Links below to specific parts used here. I tested the Intel EXPI9402PT by enabling it for direct path, adding it to a virtual machine, and connecting to an ASA. I was able to SSH and ping.
It has to add the whole card, although ports can be individually assigned to different VMs. For instance, from the screenshot below, I added lspci ID 03:00.0 to my test VM(and it retained the 03:00.0 ID in lspci under ubuntu), and I was able to add the other port(03:00.1) to another VM. Hopefully this helps others like me who are new to directpath and ESXi in general, and were considering purchasing hardware for directpath to do something similar with NICs.
