Post Asus P5E-VM DO - x64 Guests
Hello,

I'm trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard onto a Virtual Machine I built out of some older workstation parts.

I am taking some technical classes and need to have the flexibility of a virtual environment for labs etc.

The virtual machine has the following hardware:
Asus P5E-VM DO motherboard
Intel Q9650 Quad Core 3.0 Ghz Processor
8 GB RAM
1 500GB SATA Drive

ESXi 4.0 Update 1 installed ok, but when I attempt to install the x64 guest OS I get a critical stop error, further research shows that this is typically because Virtualization is not properly setup in the BIOS. I have VT-d enabled and Intel VA enabled.

The motherboard manual shows additional options under the Intel VA menu but there are none present (BIOS Rev 902).

I saw that revision 803 was marked as working, I was wondering about the success of x64-bit guests, specifically Windows Server 2008, and what if any BIOS changes were required for a successful installation.

Thank you.

You'll actually want to look for an option called Intel Virtualization Technology or VT-x.

VT-d is for Directed I/O and you actually need to enable VT-x to be able to run 64 bit VMs. The option will be on a CPU related BIOS page.

I thought this was AKA "Vanderpool Technology" which is enabled in my BIOS under CPU settings. =/

At the console you can run the below command to check if the option is enabled.

esxcfg-info|grep HV

0 – VT/AMD-V indicates that support is not available in this hardware.
1 – VT/AMD-V indicates that VT and AMD-V might be available but they are not supported in this hardware.
2 – VT/AMD-V indicates that VT and AMD-V are available but are currently not enabled.
3 – VT/AMD-V indicates that VT and AMD-V are enabled in the BIOS and can be used.

What sort of stop error are you getting?

I'm not sure how to access the CLI of the ESX server. I've never noticed if there was a console tab for the root appliance.

I don't have vSphere Client access to the box at this time anyway.

The error I'm getting is during the Server 2008 install

"Status 0xc00035a"

"Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode."

I've sent a tech inquiry to Asus, but I'm not holding my breath for anything valuable from them.

Here's some screens of the BIOS options.

(Yes I did cold boot the machine after making Vanderpool Technology changes)

To get to the console use steps 1 - 3 here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_enable_SSH.php.

Can you also post the VMX file for the VM?

Eurika!!

~ # esxcfg-info|grep HV
|----HV Support............................................3
|----HV Replay Capable.....................................true

I've been struggling with this for about 5 days now and finally stumbled across what looks to be a listserv archive where Tom Buhl had a similar problem with Xen and was kind enough to postback what he did to resolve it.

Evidently the Intel TXT(LT) configuration must be DISABLED for VT-x to function.

I hope someone finds this answer easier than I did.

Kudos to the mail archive I found this on:
http://markmail.org/message/435hxckdfpx5zuw6

I don't really know what TXT Initialization is for, so I doubt I'll miss it.
