Post ESXi 4.0 Installer hangs
I d/l the latest iso from vmware for esxi 4.0 and am attempting to install from cd to usb. The installer unpacks all the files but hangs as soon as installation begins with the line "no compatible network adapter found". Does needing a patch for the NIC prevent installation? The instructions said to patch the NIC driver after install. I checked the iso md5 sum to make sure I didn't get a corrupted d/l but it checks out. My MB is GA-EP45-UD3P which has been tested.

With ESXi 4 a NIC has to initialize during the install process. You can use the script here to integrate a driver into the install image or just copy the dd image to the usb drive, boot with a linux live CD and add the oem.tgz file.

Well the script you linked is linux and my only other working system right now is windows, though I do have an ubuntu cd I can boot off. Are there more specific directions on how I would do what you mentioned in the end of your post?

There are two oem.tgz files for the install process.
1) The first gets booted for the install process.
a) copy the file to the root of the install CD image
b) edit isolinux.cfg to add --- oem.tgz after the following

mboot.c32
append vmkboot.gz --- vmkernel.gz --- sys.vgz --- cim.vgz --- ienviron.vgz --- install.vgz

2) The second oem.tgz is part of a dd image file that get's copied to your install disk. That's a bit harder to update on CD so you can do this.
a) Do the steps in item 1 above to get the install CD to boot and install properly
b) after the install is complete, boot with a linux live CD, mount the install partition and then copy over the oem.tgz file.

This article discusses using a live CD to modify oem.tgz on the install partition. You'll need a live CD with network support as you'll have to copy the oem.tgz file to the install drive.

I can't say I've ever modified an iso before. Is there some special software for this, because I don't think Roxio has the capability? I suppose I could copy the files from the cd I already burned to hard drive and edit them there before making a new disc, but I don't think it would be bootable at that point.

You might look at winimage to edit the ISO. I would avoid editing the oem.tgz on Windows as the permissions in the file will be messed up.

Winimage is not capable of editing iso images. I've tried several other iso editors but can't find any that I don't have to pay for. All the trials have severe limitations. So what are my other options? This is rapidly turning into a major headache. I'm on day 3 and haven't even gotten the install done yet. Is there another way to install besides the iso?

Would you have an Intel Pro 1000 around that you could add?

Ok, I thought I'd seen something about using dd to create a bootable USB but couldn't remember where. I think I'll give that a try. No Intel NICs, unfortunately. The only NICs I have lying around are some very old Linksys LNE10007 PCI cards. I don't even think my MB will take old PCI. Hopefully the dd extraction will work.
