 Dell Inspiron 530
System: Dell Inspiron 530 Chipset: Intel G33 CPU: Intel Q6600 BIOS: 1.15 NIC: LoM (LAN on Motherboard) Broadcom
ESXi 4 works well on this machine. The on board NIC works in ESXi4. This is an improvement because the onboard didn't work in ESXi3.
The onboard SATA works perfectly.

 Re: Dell Inspiron 530
Thanks for posting this. The Intel e1000 / e1000e drivers for ESXi 4.0 use a much newer version which is helpful for a lot of the onboard Intel NICs.

 Re: Dell Inspiron 530
Hi Kevan,
Can you post mode details about your Inspiron 530? How did you get Intel VT enabled in the Dell BIOS?
I also have 2 Dell Inspiron 530, with BIOS level 1.0.16 with a dual core E2160 1.795ghz and I do not see any place in the BIOS to turn on these features. I know the E2160 is not VT capable, but I would like to upgrade my whiteboxes, and If I only need to upgrade my processor that would be a lot cheaper.

The option in the BIOS will be available if you have a VT capable processor. I have a Q6600 in my 530 and the option is available.

 Re: Dell Inspiron 530
Thanks Kavan and David,
I got both of my Dell Inspiron 530 upgraded to the full version of ESX4 release 164009. Everything works well, and even the onboard NIC 10/100 is recognized, I can have a backup for the service console.
Now just left to upgrade the processor to have the ability to run 64bit VMs, the E2160 doesn't have long mode enabled. So my upgrade will likely be the INTEL E8400 Wolfdale CPU.

 Re: Dell Inspiron 530
The upgrade to the e8400 Wolfdale Core2 Duo went flawlessly on both machines, since it had the same 65Watt requirement as original processors, no need to upgrade the power supply. With 300W i'm running 3 HDD. I can also confirm that Fault-Tolerance (FT) works with the E8400. There little dell inspirons are awsome.

 Re: Dell Inspiron 530
I have a 530s and am just about to try to install ESXi 4.0 on it. I see some people mentioning they got 8GB of memory working after a BIOS update. Everything I see still seems to say it only supports 4GB of memory? Any references that say it supports 8GB (before I try buying memory)?
