I would guess you tried to manually load the driver or have edited simple.map. With 3.5 I recall someone using a hex editor on the Intel ICH driver to add support for a device ID that wasn't included yet. Might be worth a try in this case as well.

Finally, I have made a VMware ESXi 4.0 iso with 3ware-9xxx driver support.
It was harder than I thought :) I will share it with you if someone else have
a need for it. Please link it from http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/customize_oem_tgz.php
It support 3ware 9690SA and 3ware 9650SE for sure. Dont know if 3ware 9550SX
are supported also. Try it.
