Beware -- this driver set misbehaves with at least one mass-market Realtek 8169 -based motherboard. I installed this oem.tgz on an HP Pavilion MC715-AAR-ABA a6712f, dual core E5200 @ 2.50 GHz, and the part was automatically detected as an R8168. This seems to work for a while, but then after a few gigs of network transfer, the network goes away and never comes back -- ESXi can't even get a DHCP offer anymore.

The solution to this problem was to force oem.tgz to load the R8169 driver instead of the R8168 driver. The way to do this is to edit in oem.tgz, the /etc/vmware/simple.map file and change the following line:

10ec:8168 0000:0000 network r8169.o

A hacked oem.tgz file that Works For Me is included here. Use at your own risk.

Worked very well to my RTL 8101E NIC.

Thanks a lot!

Has anyone set up a build environment for the sky2 drivers to add PCI IDs? I bought a motherboard with two Ethernet controllers onboard but the current sky 2 driver doesn't have the IDs. The IDs are 11ab:4380.

If someone has a build environment and can add those I'd appreciate it. If not I'll see about setting up to compile my own sometime this week.

Hello all!

First off, thanks for putting in the effort of creating a custom driver, awesome!. Sadly, it's not really working for me. I have a marvell yukon E8040 card, which should be supported in sky2, and it is detected by ESX4. I manually changed the PCI ID in simple.map to my card's ID, and the system boots, but hangs after a couple of minutes when the network is being used. I can only use the Vsphere client for ~30 seconds, for instance.

Hardware: Dell Inspiron laptop, P8600, 4 GB RAM, marvell yukon nic. I turned off everything irrelevant in the BIOS but it still hangs and loses network connection. I boot from USB.

It also never remembers my network settings (static), but it does save my password. :?

Logs show some TCP segmentation errors, and a lot of suppressed messages. It then detects a lack of heartbeats and the UI freezes. A minute later the whole thing locks up.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

I'm not ported the Sky2 driver, but from my experience with the realtek driver, is possible that the problem is a buffer overflow! Are you using VLANs? If do, please, try the same without it.

Regards!

No, I am not using VLAN's, but thank you for the suggestion. I've gotten the system to save the IP configuration and licensing information, but it still freezes after a couple clicks in Vsphere.
I also tried the Skge.o driver but that didn't support my NIC.

I assume the driver doesn't fully support the 88E8040?
Link speed is detected though, and can be set to auto negotiate.

I'm a noob so go easy on me, but can a person take the HDD out and throw it into another machine, and modify the needed files...and install the HDD back in and have with recognize the Marvell NIC?

Or is there some compiling that needs to get accomplished.

I have a P5B Deluxe with a Marvell 8056 & 8001

~Thanks

You can or optionally use a Linux live CD to access the files using a process like the one shown here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/disabl ... tartup.php.

But if you're able to boot ESXi and have network connectivity then you can just enable SSH and copy the file over the network.

did you find a solution? I have the same problem with a Sony Vaio F...
it seems to be not sufficient to modify the system.map to point to sky2.o drive for 11ab:4380.

Does anyboady have a hint?

Thanks, Andrea.
