Just picked up one of these Dell Inspiron 580 i5 650 from bestbuy to try out. It comes with 8 gig of memory standard (max) which isn't bad. It has 1 PCI-e 16x and 2 PCI-e 1x slots as well as a normal PCI slot. I removed the graphics card in the PCIe-16 and will just use the onboard video because I need to add an Intel 4 port ethernet card. There is not much you can do with the PCI-e 1x slots.

It has the broadcom built-in adapter that is not supported, but I put in a 2 port Intel card and it booted right up. I got the standard error that no supported ethernet was found.

Still a bit new to this but I used the esxi 4.0 U1 dell custom iso and installed without issues. it's build-208167. Now the fun begins.

You'll likely need to add a NIC as ESXi doesn't include any drivers for 10/100 NICs (i.e. for this component) -

Do you think the i3-530 cpu will be compatible with ESXi 4?

Even with out the rigth NIC will ESXI install normaly or do I need some sort off workaround?

ESXi does require a NIC that it can recognize to complete the install process.
