Hi all !

Is there a way to install modules while the ESX server is up and running ?
Of course, it requires a reboot to be sure that they works.

All the tutorials i saw until now was only talking about the famous oem.tgz that require the fact of reinstalling all the OS.

PS : i tried to modify the files pci.ids, simple.map, vmware-devices.map, and adding the good xxxxx.o in the /usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod directory ...
Everytime i reboot the server, the files modified in the /etc/vmware directory switch back to their original versions. The xxxxx.o module stays in its directory.

In fact my question is simple : is there a way to add modules to the ESX/ESXi installation without having to reinstall it ?

If you want a file to stay past a reboot then you have to add it to oem.tgz. See the home page for that article and you can do it post install without requiring a reinstall.

For a driver issue I would first copy the driver to the system and try to load it. Only when that works would I worry about putting it into oem.tgz along with an update simple.map (pci.ids would be optional).
