Your procedure is satisfactory.
Although I think that it is because the version of libata probably changed, I do not understand for details, either. Although it seems to be good to use the source file of kernel 2.6.24, many symbol problems are unsolvable.
I am sorry that a help is impossible.

Do you (or anyone else?) know what Linux kernel headers version is needed to develop drivers for 5.0?

Hello i am trying to enable the on board NIC with no success.
I have Asus P5K SE/EPU
lspci -v list the NIC like this:
000:002:00.0 Ethernet controller Network controller: Atheros Communications P5KPL-VM Motherboard Class 0200: 1969:1048
the commands i give is : esxcli software acceptance set --level=CommunitySupported esxcli software vib install -v /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ net-atl1e-1.0.1.14.x86_64.vib
The result of the first command is ok The result of the second is this: Installation Result Message: Host is not changed. Reboot Required: false VIBs Installed: VIBs Removed: VIBs Skipped: AR81Family_bootbank_net-atl1e_1.0.1.14
am i doing something wrong ?

You will see this message when the package is already installed. Check with esxcli software vib list

It is true, with this command i found that this vib is allready install. The problem is why the nic not working. The address of the nic is 1969:1048 and in this link viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3494&start=20says it is supported. What am i doing wrong ? Any help please ?

Hi,
the mapping for the device 1969:1048 is missing from ichi's original package. I modified it to include the mapping. Try the attached file.
Remove the original package with esxcli software vib remove net-atl1e then install the attached one.

I installed the driver but the Nic refuse to work . The command esxcfg-nics -l does not listed.

Hi All,
I have on board NIC Realtek 8111DL (Intel DG41WV) which was not detected by the ESXi 5.0 installer, so i tried to use som TGZs with no luck, then i bought a D Link dge 528T PCI and also not detected even with the TGZs and the VIBs in this thread.
Any help?
