This is a software RAID controller, so while you likely have it setup correctly, the best you'll get with ESX(i) is individual drives.

is there absolutely anything i can do to make some sort of redundancy, or am i going to be stuck buying an expensive hardware raid card to make this work properly?

If you stick with the controller then you would need to backup from one drive to the other. If you need RAID then you have to go with a true raid card. See the HCL off the home page for some options. You can pick up an older Dell Perc card for a cheaper price for example.
