Post Recommend bios setting nehalem plattform
Hi everyone,
does anyone figure out recommended setting for new intel nehalem plattform?
hardware: mainboard intel S5520HC, 2x E5520, 12GB DDR3
Controller: Intel SRCSASJV incl BBU
Controller: Intel Quad Port Nic
Booting from USB Stick ESXi U4 with latest update

bios shows the following VT options:

I cannot find any info on the net for best settings

Also my extra nic Intel Quad 1000PT is not recognized. Tried std installation esx on a sata hdd: nic works as supposed.

I'd leave the options as is, with the exception Execute Disable Bit which I would enable. You may have issues with vmotion / EVC if you don't.

VT Directed I/O won't be supported until ESX(i) 4.0 so that could be off.

What model of NIC are you using and what's the PCI id?

on device: Intel Pro/1000 PT Quad Port EXPI9404PTBLK (I maybe 1 or l - not sure, looks like a pipe). It is not the low profile version.

should be this one:

maybe i am wrong, but this nic should work in esxi 3.5 u4.

There's an entry in simple.map so ESXi should try to load the driver. If you run lspci -p, do you see the NIC listed and with the e1000 module listed for it? If the module is missing, check /var/log/messages for any errors when the e1000 driver loads.

Hi Dave,

the quad port nic is not listed. only onboard nics are shown:
01:00.00 8086:10a7 8086:34dc 10/ 10/0xd9 B V igb vmnic0
01:00.01 8086:10a7 8086:34dc 11/ 11/0x79 A V igb vmnic1

in /var/log/messages i can find vmnic0 and vmnic1 but nothing else. so networkcard is not recognized by esxi. i ve repeated the above steps using different slots for this card.

i just found 3 errors:
first: time zone in unsupported bash is different from settings in vi client (2 hours difference)
second: May 7 06:05:26 vmkernel: TSC: 713549272 cpu0:0)IDT: 1337: 0xfe <error> exclusive, flags 0x0
third: May 7 06:05:28 vmkernel: 0:00:00:06.276 cpu13:1177)ERROR: connect-debounce failed, port 1 disabled

i am thinking about backup my VMs over the weekend and restart from the beginning - or waiting some days until 4.0 is availible. so if you do not have another (great ;-) ) idea, let us stop here wasting our free time. thank you very much for your support!

You might try this

1) enable SSH - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_enable_SSH.php
2) in one session run tail -f /var/log/messages
3) in another run vmkload_mod /mod/e1000.o

See if the driver is able to recognize the device. You might get an error in the output of the first session, or it may be that the driver is able to use the NIC and esxcfg-nics -l will then list the new ports.
