I tried VM to VM download/upload each other via SMB. VM to VM traffic does work!

2nd, 3rd.... powered VM can not upload files to the SMB file servers, which ESXi physical NIC connect to.

I will describe my testing.
1, Boot up ESXi server
2, Power-on the 1st-VM (Windows Server 2008)
3, Try to download/upload files from/to a SMB file server (I will call it \\PHY_SMB_SERVER, this server is connected by ESXi physical NIC) . Success!
4, Power-on the 2nd-VM (Windows Server 2008)
5, On 2nd-VM, I try to download/upload files from/to the \\1st-VM\C$. Success!
6, On 2nd-VM, I try to upload a 215M files to the \\PHY_SMB_SERVER. Failed! You can see the screenshot.

7, On 2nd-VM, I try to upload the screenshot (1.jpg and 2.jpg) to \\PHY_SMB_SERVER. It seemed succeed, because Windows did not report any error, but when I open the 1.jpg and 2.jpg on PHY_SMB_SERVER via native logon, the image is damaged. You can see the attached BAD.RAR file. I believe it is due to the abnormal network transfer.

Is it your own e1000e driver that you're using or VMware's. If your own, hawe you tried the one from 3.5 Update 4 or have you tried to install ESXi 4.0?

Hi Dave
I am using the e1000e.o from Gizzard's. download/file.php?id=6 (last post in page 1 of this thread)
The one in ESXi 3.5 U4 does not support my NIC (8086:10ce), though I modified simple.map and pci.ids.
I haven't tried the e1000e.0 in ESXi 4.0. Could you please upload here~ Thanks :)

Do you think it is due to the e1000e.o? Any log file is related to this? I checked the var/log/message file, but I did not get any useful information.

You'd have to install 4.0 as the driver from it won't work with ESXi 3.5. I've compiled the PCI id list for 4.0, and the 10ce is listed - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/Hardware_support.php.

Dave, Thanks your information. I want to test ESXi 4.0 later. Do you have any idea to fix this under ESXi 3.5?

Hi Gizzard. The motherboard I am using also has an Intel 82567LM on it, but the PCI ID is 8086:10de. Could you compile another oem.tgz for this PCI ID? That would help me a lot! Thanks!

Gizzard wrote:
Sure Dave,

Here is the oem.tgz. But I would not recomend to use this in a production env. as this is not tested fully. But it works for me. :)

This mother board is fully supported by VMWARE ESXi 4.0. Thanks to the new version.

I have a motherboard Intel DQ45CB and VMWARE ESXi fully supports it with a little tunning. No addtional hardware or software installation is required.

I'm not sure about fixing this with 3.5 short of getting the latest source for the driver and trying to compile it.
