Post SIL 3512 SATA Controller
I would like to try vmware in my computer (ASUS M2A-VM HDMI / 8 GB RAM / Dual Core Athlon ). I found, that SATA controller on motherboard is unsupported, so I bought SIL 3512 SATA controller. With this controller I'm able to install ESXi 3.5 server, but when I try install any system in virtual machine installation hang up near the end. I found, that problem is with my HDD. HDD is WD Caviar SE16 (WD3200AAKS). With another disk from WD Caviar RE2 is ESXi working without problem. Any advice to solve this problem? I have tried to modify oem.tgz to recognize onboard SATA controller, but it was unsuccessfull.

Hello, what's the model and PCI for the sata cotroller - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/customize_oem_tgz.php.

How far into an install of a guest OS are you able to get?

Hello,

sorry for borrowing the thread.

Will the raid0 and raid1 arrays configured on sil3512 be recognized by ESXi or will I be stuck with physical disks only?

I haven't seen anyone confirm is RAID actually works with the Sil3512 controller. ESXi will see at least individual drives but I'm not sure about RAID arrays. For other controllers like Adaptec HostRAID or Intel ICH*R controllers, ESXi doesn't support software RAID so all you get is individual drives.

ESXi doesn't have a driver for that controller - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi3. ... le.map.php.

Did you ever try to run a HD check on the one drive that didn't work?

I know, that onboard controller is not supported, so I add supported SATA controler with SIL 3512A chipset. I run hdd check, but no errors have been found. It seem's, that there is incompactibility between SIL3512A controller and HDD. When I try install standard Linux I get error while trying to chage partition table.
