Post Problems installing ESXi 3.5 U4 on GA-MA78GM-US2H
Hi all,

After spending several hours trying to install 3.5 U4 I'm posting my first message here calling for ideas/help.
I have burnt the iso with the oem.tgz and it boots fine until a point where it says :

"Starting VMWare ESX Server 3i: VMkernel loaded successfully."

After that nothing happens anymore.

I have booted off a usb-cdrom. The PC has a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H MB with a AMD Phenom X4 9850 (Black edition) CPU and 8GB Kingston HyperX CL4 (4x2GB) RAM.

Any ideas ?
thanks
Roland

Hello

How did you add the oem file using my script or did you do it manually in windows ?

The files on the CD has to have ownership 201:201
Have you tested to boot a standard cd see how far it comes ?

Daniel thanks for your reply. I have used Windows UltraISO to add oem.tgz to the standard ISO file. I also tried to install CentOS which worked just fine.

I mean burn a Standard ESXi CD and try to boot from it ?
If it works and you come to the stop of the system not finding your sata/ide controller then we know it's brob nothing wrong with the hardware.

You can't just add a oem file like that, it will not work you need to do it
on a linux system.

There is few options to do that. the easy way is to install a VMware server and install ubuntu ( if you like to use my script , i'm working on CentOS support too )

This is if you don't have a linux system.

What will 100% work in CentOS is the ISO making option in my script

Tnx Daniel for clarification. I have tried to boot from a plain ESXi 3.5 u4 CD and even 4.0 but the same problem exists. Does that change anything ? I guess it's a HW related issue right ? Although I'm using "tested" components according Whitebox specs.

From the last setup boot message I can see:

"Starting VMWare ESX Server 3i: VMkernel loaded successfully."

How do you come to the conclusion it's not finding the sata/ide controller ?

Ok I have created an customized iso with your script (3.4) on ubuntu. I have used the oem.tgz from:

www.icjacobsen.com/dld/oem.tgz

The CD boots fine but it still stops at the point where it says:

"Starting VMWare ESX Server 3i: VMkernel loaded successfully."

:(

Thanks for the hint. I could not test it since I was impatient and I found an old Asus M2N-E MB which workes fine even with ESXi 4 (plain ESXi4 install CD no customization needed). So I got rid of the Gigabyte MB and I'm happy with the M2N-E now.

thanks for all your input and help.

You misunderstood me , if a original CD had booted normal but stopped at it missing a drive to install on then you hade to add the oem file using my script or do it manually.

Good to hear it's working now :D
