Post RAID health monitoring / alerts
I'm evaluating ESXi 5.0.
My hw consists of
- Intel S1200BTS server board (w/ integrated ethernet)
- Xeon E3-1240
- 8 GB of RAM
- LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i controller
- 2x WD 3TB disks configured as mirror

After installing LSIProvider vib, I can see disk controller health info from vSphere Client. But what I'm missing is a way to configure alert to admin in case the RAID set fails. I have no prior knowledge about MegaRAID (I used to like 3ware, but there's no 3ware driver in ESXi 5.0)

I expected it should be possible to see the controller status (and hopefully configure the alert function) from LSI's MegaRAID Storage Manager running in another machine, but so far I haven't been able to make MSM to see the MegaRAID controller.

Should this be possible, and are the necessary software components available yet? I found this "document", but I can't make things work:

Is there available any more exact howto, telling which version of driver etc are needed?

My worst scenario is that functions like this were available only in a paid version of ESXi, I hope this isn't the case?

Confirm you have latest Firmware, Currently: Version:12.12.0-0073

Confirm the latest LSI SMIS Provider VIB installed on ESXi host, Currently: VMW-ESX-5.0.0-LSIProvider-500.04.V0.24-261033-456178 is applied to your ESXi 5.0 http://www.lsi.com/channel/products/storagecomponents/Pages/MegaRAIDSAS9260-4i.aspx#four

Install the LSI MegaRaid Storage Manager (LSI MSM) on a Windows VM hosted by the ESXi server that contains the LSI 9260-4i Controller. Current Version at this time is: 11.06.00-03. NOTE: For Management of my PERC 6/E controller I had to use an older version of the LSI MSM software, seach google for: LSI MegaRaid Storage Manager 6.50-11.... Download from ACER website. Readme for 6.50-11 supports: MegaRAID SAS Controllers: 9260-4i, 9260-8i, 9260DE-8i, 9261-8i, 9280-4i4e, 9280-8e, 280DE-8e, and my PERC 6/E.

Update the HOST files on both your ESXi server and your Windows Virtual Machine to which you installed the LSI MSM:

ESXi 5.0 Server: "/etc/hosts"
