Post Adding support for IDE Drives
Hi,

I am attempting to follow the following instructions on how to add support for IDE drives to ESXi 5:

http://andysworld.org.uk/2011/09/20/tweaking-esxi-50-adding-un-supported-hardware-to-vmware-vsphere-esxi-50-adding-a-qle-220-to-esxi-50/

I get as far as:
# tar -xvf scsi_qla.tgz
but get the error:
tar: invalid tar magic

I have also tried downloading this file to a Windows PC and using 7-Zip to open the archive, but 7-Zip says the archive is damaged.

I wrote to the author of the page, but I have not received a reply in over a week.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue might be here?

Try first:
vmtar -x scsi_qla.tgz -o scsi_qla.tar

Thanks switch, that worked! However, now I realize that the article I'm following is specifically for enabling support for a qlogic HBA only.

While looking into this a bit further I noticed this:

Code:
00:02:00.0 IDE interface Mass storage controller: Marvell Technologies, Inc. 88SE6121 SATA II Controller [vmhba32]
         Class 0101: 11ab:6121

and

So to me, it looks like my controller is already supported! (not sure why it says SATA II controller). I don't know why the drive I have attached to that controller isn't showing up however...
