Post HP Microserver N40l working out of box (ESXi 5.0)
Hello,

the new HP Microserver N40l is working out of the box. Only the Raid is not funktional, because it is not a real Hardware-Raidcontroler (Fake-Raid). Each disk ist seen separately.

The N40l is an upgrade from the N36l with only a new CPU (Turion II 1,5 GHz), 2 GB Ram (N36l = 1 GB) and a 250Gb HDD (N36l = 160GB).
It comes with a eSATA Port, but i didn't use it at this time, so i can't report if it is working with ESXi 5.0.

The N40l supports ECC RAM (the original 2GB RAM Modul is with ECC).

Boot from USB from the internal USB Soket works fine :-)

Price: 188 EUR (12.2011 in Germany)

Very nice :-)

Greetings
Tom

Do you plan on putting in a PCIe raid controller? I want to use one of these as a FreeNAS box and another 2 for ESXi hosts. So even though ESX won't directly support the onboard RAID I should be able to utilize the SW RAID on the NAS box to mount iSCSI volumes right?

I have a question for you : do you have a lot of information about the health status ? Because i have only information about processor and software composant ... I don't have any information about HDD health and that's probelmatic :/

Thanks

To get health information about the system ESXi relies on an IPMI based system. For storage controllers ESXi requires a CIM provider which is typically only developed for supported RAID controllers (although not all of them).
