Hi Folks,

may someone confirm that the onboard SATA-Controller (Shuttle SH67H3) works out-of-the-box with ESXi 5?

Thanks for help in advance,
RainZufa

Does all the high end features work such as Vmotion, DRS, HA and lastly FT? I am in the process of setting up a home lab and don't really want to buy power hungry servers. Please advise.

vMotion Support: Not affected by the motherboard and CPU being used. It requires shared storage (NFS, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel) and a setting change at the virtual network layer in vSphere. The QNAP storage device being used by the OP should be sufficient for shared storage, from what I've read, although I've never personally used that one.

DRS: Not affected by the motherboard and CPU being used. It is a software setting at the VMware Cluster level, that is configured using the vSphere Client that has been connected to a vCenter Server.

HA: Not affected by the motherboard and CPU being used. It is a software setting at the VMware Cluster level, that is configured using the vSphere Client that has been connected to a vCenter Server.

FT: This is affected by the motherboard and CPU being used. In the OP's attached screenshots, you can see that FT is supported by looking for the text, "Host configured for FT: Yes".

DirectPath (VT-d): This is affected by the chipset and CPU being used on the motherboard. In the OP's attached screenshots, you can see that DirectPath is supported by looking for the text, "DirectPath I/O: Supported".

I just priced out this box, it is around ~700USD with i7-2600K, 16GB ram, and "tiny" 1TB harddisk. Seem likes a pretty budget ESXi setup even if I order two. :D

@ cav...

I have pretty much almost the same set up that you have listed in this post.

Shuttle XPC SH67H3
Intel i7-2600K Quad core 3.40 GHz, 8MB Cache, LGA1155
16 GB PC3-10666 DDR3 1333 MHz Patriot Memory G2 Series
Two 1TB Western Digital WD1002FAEX 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA Hard Drives
One Intel EXPI9301CTBLK PCI-Express 1GB Network Adapter

When I received the SH67H3, it was running the 1.06 BIOS. I installed ESXi 4.1 and was unable to configure device pass through through vSphere Client (it was greyed out). I updated the BIOS to version 1.07 and reinstalled ESXi 4.1, still no luck enabling device pass through. I verified that Virtualization is enabled in the BIOS. I also went through the /etc/vmware/esx.conf and verified that the USB Host Controllers are recognized. They are recognized and
assigned as follows:

/device/000:000:26.0/owner = "vmkernel"
/device/000:000:29.0/owner = "vmkernel"

I tried to modify this file and assign the to "passthru", but this had no effect in ESXi allowing device pass through.

Where there any specific tasks you had to complete in order to get this working? Thanks!

2600 "KAY" does not support DirectPath (VT-d), if this is what you are referring to. I learn the hard way myself too.

Did you have to make any changes to esxi5 to get the onboard Realtek nic to work? Just purchased some of my new lab equipment.

Purchased
1x Shuttle SH67H7
1x Boxed Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor (8M Cache, 3.40 GHz) FC-LGA10 (BX80623I72600)

Still to purchase
Memory- I am thinking 4x Kingston 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIM only £60

Shared storage
Not decided what to go for yet but I have a 1TB 7.2k SATA disk that I will use for local storage while I decide. I want to retire my current esxi host (HP Comaq 6000 pro) and purchase a 2nd Shuttle first.
