well despite my best efforts, seems I can't order via newegg, using a US Postal forwarder didn't trick them and they didn't like my Aus Credit card.

Would either of you order for me, then re-send them onto me? Obviously I'll paypal you the required funds to cover the cost of the items, postage and your time.

Hey guys,

Good news the Usb3 nics arrived from Amazon, plugged them in and they worked straight away. I have 4 nic's in each host now!

Bad news is, VSA doesn't like the Mac Mini hardware - so the extra nic's was kind of pointless.

Thanks to trickstarter and adamk for you help :)

MrDave,
Thanks for that update. I haven't been afforded the opportunity to try the VSA yet. What difficulties did you run in to when trying the VSA?

BUMP!

Just came across this thread, I am now running an ESXi box based on my 2012 6,2 Mac Mini, I would like to add the drivers for this USB adapter to my existing ESXi install. I have the Startech one referenced here but through all the pages of this thread I get lost as to which files are current and how I can install the drivers required. I really don't want to make a custom ISO and reinstall ESXi, is there a way just to transfer the needed files over? I'm running ESXi 5.1 U1, based on the VirtuallyGhetto ISO.

Thanks for the help!

Trickstarter/AdamK

Can either of you provide some steps for configuring these adapters for esxi.

I'm new to esxi and have just setup a mac mini 2012 for use as my esxi lab.

I've only dabbled with Esxi a little bit and not really used the cli

My setup is as follows

Mac Mini Internal Network Interface ... External Traffic/Mgmt
Mac Mini Thunderbolt Interface ... Internal Traffic

I've bought two ASIC adapters which I managed to get working using some of the notes in this post be they dont remain persistant on reboot

What I want to do is configure both the USB adapters to run my storage/iscsi traffic and have them bonded/trunked in order to get better throughput

Any help would be appreciated

 ASIX AX88179_178a USB NIC Driver not working
Awesome display of teamwork and ingenuity.

I'm having issuing using trickstarter's compiled driver(s) on an AMD whitebox.
Loading the usbnet driver(v25) first and ax88179vz025 (have even tried v26) seems to work.

Code:
2013-11-05T18:56:27.675Z cpu2:5890)<6>vusb0: register 'ax88179_178a' at usb-0000:00:13.2-5, ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 Gigibit Ethernet, 16:28:d2:be:c8:84
2013-11-05T18:56:27.675Z cpu2:5890)<6>ax88179_178a 2-5:1.0: interface is claimed by ax88179_178a

2013-11-05T19:04:56.317Z cpu3:5251)Uplink: 7982: Setting speed/duplex to (0 HALF) on vusb0.

the NIC is listed and even seen from the gui. I get link lights yet both CLI and GUI show it as not connected/down even while connected with link light on the dongle.

Code:
~ # esxcli network nic list
Name    PCI Device     Driver        Link  Speed  Duplex  MAC Address         MTU  Description
------  -------------  ------------  ----  -----  ------  -----------------  ----  -------------------------------------
vmnic0  0000:001:00.0  r8168         Up      100  Full    94:de:80:a3:0b:bb  1500  Realtek Realtek 8168 Gigabit Ethernet
vusb0   Pseudo         ax88179_178a  Down      0  Half    16:28:d2:be:c8:84  1500  Unknown Unknown

esxcli network nic up -n vusb0 yields:

Code:
2013-11-05T19:04:56.320Z cpu3:5251)Uplink: 8001: Wait for device vusb0 async call failed.
2013-11-05T19:05:20.277Z cpu3:6367)WARNING: UserLinux: 1331: unsupported: (void)

my ESXi version is:

~ # vmware -l
VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1

I've followed this thread to a "T", except not using a Mac Mini.
Thanks in advance.

We went through this exact scenario during the mac mini driver creation.

Trick had to modify the vmware usb module to play nicely on the mac mini. It may not be required in your case. Trickstarter is the expert so he's the guy to ask.

What happens if you try to force the mic to a full/100 state?

Any PSOD screenies would be beneficial in helping see what's going on..

No PSODs (unfortunately/fortunately?)
Auto-neg or hard yields the same results, no work.

1 note. If I don't add the usbnetvz025 driver before adding the AX881179vz025/26 driver it PSODs. This tells me it won't work without the hacked usb driver.

I have grabbed the linux drivers from StarTech (possibly rolling my own) but I'm guessing by the last rev date its the same one trickstarter is basing this driver off of:

============================================================================
ASIX AX88179_178A USB 3.0/2.0 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter
Driver Compilation & Configuration on the Linux

==================
Revision History :
==================
Version 1.2.0 Aug. 28, 2012
* Modified the ax88179_link_reset function.
* Implemented the auto detach function.
* Supported the AX88178A device.
* Fixed the media change issue.
* Fixed the wakeup issue by modified the clock select register.
