I have purchased an IBM server which comes with USB license for ESX 5.0.
I booted the server from USB without the installer and ESX 5.0 got installed. Below are my query:

1. Is it an Embedded ESXi 5.0?
2. If yes, then from where it is getting ESXi install-able files?
3. Is there any flash drive/ or USB inside IBM server which has ESXi 5.0 installer?
4. What is the difference between the performance of Embedded and regular install-able ESXi 5.0 servers?

ESXi replaced ESX with version 5

You can run ESXi from a USB drive

As I understand there is non or minimal performance impact running from a USB or flash drive. ESXi is running as a RAM drive.


I guess you got a preinstalled USB drive with ESXi on it.

Basically you got a flash device with ESXi preinstalled on it. If you needed to reinstall ESXi you would need to download an installer from IBM.

ESXi will boot a bit slower from a flash device, but after it is up and running there's no performance difference.
