Post Passthru works after host reboot once
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about this scenario.

Setting up a Haugppauge tuner card (HVR2200). I can get the card to work in a Win 7 x64 Ultimate guest once after the host starts then not again. In order:

1. Power on or reboot ESX host
2. Start Win 7 guest - card works perfectly for as long as I want
3. Restart guest - card displays OK in device manager but does not function properly. No errors anywhere except it doesn't work.

I've been playing with reset methods for the card in /etc/vmware/passthru.map to no avail. I really wasn't a 100% sure if this reset is used each time the guest starts or only when the host starts.

Happy to follow thoughts down rabbit holes if anyone has any suggestions.

The reset should occur each time the VM starts up. What sort of hardware are you using? Is the device on a shared bus?

Thanks - good to know it should reset each time.

I am using an Intel DX58OG mobo. The card is question is a Hauppauge HVR-2200 dual digital tuner. It can be seen below as the Philips device (06:00.0). No shared bus from my limited PCIe understanding.

I have tried all the reset types by setting up in /etc/vmware/passthru.map

Still only working once after a reboot of the ESX host.

Have you taken a look through the vmware.log file for the VM after you power it down and backup on?

I cleared the logs this morning then did the following:

1. ESX host restart
2. Start guest
3. Confirmed card worked OK
4. Restart guest
5. Confirmed guest card not working
6. Reviewed log

THe only line in the shutdown / startup area (step 4 above) relating to the card is:

Quote:
Aug 30 20:39:52.941: vcpu-0| PCIPassthru: Resetting Device at 006:00.0

No errors or anything to suggest a problem.

Any difference if you shutdown the VM instead of performing a restart?

No restart, shutdown, same result. I was originally shutting down but moved to restarting because it made tresting that 10 seconds faster :-)
