Post Gigabyte MA770T-U3DP - USB passthrough working but ... slow
My box is still this one, based on the Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P, but esxi has been upgraded to 4.1 (build 348481) last week.
I have also added a SD card reader to boot from.

I've got USB passthrough working by following the instructions (add controller to VM - add device to VM - ready).

I tried adding a USB harddrive (WD Elements 1.5TB), it shows up in the Windows VM as a WD Ext HD 1021 USB device. That's correct, my laptop also uses that description.

So far, so good. Next, I tried to copy a few directories and files, and that also works.
Ideally, I would like to use USB disks to make backups of my local storage.

But, the copying is very very slow. It is slower than copying to my (slow) NAS, or copying to the same USB disk attached to a networked PC.

Is this normal, or do I have to change some settings to speed up the working of the USB devices? I looked around a bit, but there isn't much to configure I'm afraid :(

Secondly, I also have the problem that esxi doesn't want to boot anymore from the SD card as long as the USB disk is attached. I've seen a few others with the same problem,a nd there doesn't seem to be an esay fix for that.

Unfortunatly, both these problems make the USB passthrough pretty useless for me...

What sort of speed are you seeing? Are you connected to a USB 2 port? Any other USB devices in use on the system?

Yes, it's a USB 2.0 port.

The only other USB device connected is a multi-car reader. I use an SD card to boot my esxi box.

The copying speed was visually slow, but to measure it I used a robocopy script that I use for creating my backups.

I ran the script twice with the same sets of source files
1. Local storage on esxi -> USB passthrough disk
2. Local storage on esxi -> NAS

When a set of files has been completed, robopcopy generates a summary, so that makes it easier to compare the relative speeds.

The sample I used copied 2 sets of data.

Results:

Set 1 - USB passthough
Code:

Total    Copied   Skipped  Mismatch    FAILED    Extras
Dirs :       913        913         0         0         0         0

Normally I make backups from my (non-esxi) machines with the same script to both the NAS and a local USB disk.
Copying to the NAS is slower than copying to the local USB disk, so it came as a bad surprise that the USB passthrough copying was slower still...

What sort of speed do you see with the USB drive connected to a physical host?

This is the result of the backup of another data set from a non-esxi machine to the NAS and the external USB disk (attached locally to the machine containing the data)

NAS:
Code:

Total    Copied   Skipped  Mismatch    FAILED    Extras
     Dirs :     72971       902     72069         0         0         0
    Files :   2691162     42303   2648859         0         0         0
    Bytes : 245.838 g   5.778 g 240.059 g         0         0         0
    Times :   2:44:23   0:09:41                       0:00:00   2:34:42

USB:
Code:
Total    Copied   Skipped  Mismatch    FAILED    Extras
     Dirs :     72971       902     72069         0         0         0
    Files :   2691162     42303   2648859         0         0         0
    Bytes : 245.838 g   5.778 g 240.059 g         0         0         0
    Times :   1:58:13   0:20:16                       0:00:00   1:37:56

In both cases, there was already a previous backup on the targets.
The backup script will skip the data that has not been changed and copy only new or changed file. It will also delete old data but in this case there was none.

Interestingly, according to the statistics, the actual copying of the files take less time on the NAS, while the total backup operation takes longer.

Generally, I start both scripts (to NAS and to local USB) at the same time.

The first question is: is there anyone who is using USB passtrough who is getting a decent speed when using an external USB disk?
(Decent means: comparable to the normal speed when writing to USB disks from a non-esx machine)
