Post Working Intel DP55WB whitebox with Digium TDM400P PCI card
I setup a new whitebox server using an Intel DP55WB motherboard and Core i7-860 processor. BIOS updated to WBIBX10J.86A (09/2009). The onboard Intel GigE NIC won't work with ESXi 4.0 Update1. Modifying oem.tgz won't help because this new chipset is not supported by the ESXi e1000 driver:

8086 Intel Corporation
10f0 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection

I suspect this will work in a future ESXi update, since the Linux e1000 driver now supports this chipset. I didn't have the time to port it myself, so I purchased an inexpensive Intel Pro/1000 CT PCIe card (EXPI9301CTBLK) that works for $31.

Now for VMDirectPath...

Since this is a Core i7 and the BIOS has an option, VT-d is supported. I created a VM for an asterisk pbx which relies on a Digium TDM400P analog fsx/fxo pci card to connect PSTN (telco) and analog phones in my house. The pci card id is E159:B1D9 as seen in the screenshot. I was initially confused by the PCI ID description of "Tiger Jet Network Inc. Intel 537" in the vSphere Client, but this is indeed the Digium card. Marking the Digum PCI card for passthrough also includes the Firewire controller on this motherboard for some reason (on the same bus?). Once I added the PCI device to the VM for asterisk, I was able to see the device from the VM and the DAHDI drivers and asterisk 1.6 loaded fine.

File comment: Screenshot of vSphere Client showing PCI Passthrough for Digium TDM400P PCI card.

I would like to use the ESXi4 with Intel DQ57TM and Intel Core i7 860.

You said there is a problem with driver for NIC Intel 82578 in ESXi 4.

What about USB ports and Com port,
are you able to passthrough them without any problems?

Thank you
