Post DELL Precision Laptop M6500
Please help ... :-)

I am trying to install ESXI 4.1 to a Dell M6500 Laptop

Booting with CD I received 1st error 'No network card found'.
Using lspci -v I found that the NIC is Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5761e (14e4:1680). I was able to update simple.map and load tg3.o and network is now available.

2nd error encountered is no harddrive found.
fdisk -l reports nothing found

So, using lspci -v I found "RAID bus controller Mass storage controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 82801 SATA RAIDControler (Class 0104: 8086:282a).
I updated simple.map again and achi is hooking the controller as vmhba0 but I am still unable to install.
lspci -p gives me the following:
000:000:31.2 8086:282a 1028:02ef 10/ 10/0xa8 D V ahci vmhba0

In order to make things a little easier I made a USB key to make changes a little easier.

As a sanity check I was able to successfully load CentOS 5.5 on the laptop as a test and it worked fine.

So, I tried Setting BIOS settings for SATA drive: RAID, ACHI, and ATA and I still do not see the harddrive.

What am I missing or what should I try?

Anything visible to fdisk -l in ACHI or ATA mode?

Dave,

No, but I do get different values as follows:

RAID

Intel Corporation Mobile 82801 SATA RAID Controller (vmhba0)
RAID bus controller Mass storage controller:

Class 0104: 8086:282a 1028:02ef

ACHI

Intel Corporation Ibex Peak 6 port SATA AHCI Controller
SATA controller Mass storage controller

Class 0106: 8086:3b2f 1028:02ef

ATA (driver loaded ata_piix ... ?)

Intel Corporation Ibex Peak 4 port SATA AHCI Controller (vmhba0)
IDE interface Mass storage controller

Class 0101: 8086:3b2e 1028:02ef

Intel Corporation Ibex Peak 2 port SATA AHCI Controller (vmhba1)
IDE interface Mass storage controller

Class 0101: 8086:3b2d 1028:02ef

I do get a failure at the very beginning with the NIC not loading on boot. When the NIC fails to boot, then lvmdriver also fails as part of sysboot and then I get an error from sysboot: 34.storage-drivers returned failure.

When I use root and load tg3 and lvmdriver drivers, I tried to do a esxcfg-rescan on vmhba0:

Scsiscan 1059: Path vmhba0 : C0 : T0 : L0 Vendor: ATA Model ST9500420ASG Rev: 0004
Scsiscan 1062: Path vmhba0 : C0 : T0 : L0 Type: 0x0, ANSI rev: 5, TPGS: 0 (none)
ScsiPathClaimVsi: 825: Claim operation failed with 'Already Disabled' for plugin type 1

Could this be happening since the NIC fails out first? Is there a way to force the tg3.o to load?

In any of these modes if you run lspci -p is a module listed for the storage controller?

Yes,

RAID and AHCI both list ahci as the module and ATA listed ata_piix

Dave,

I went back in to verify settings and a lspci -p gives me:

000:000:31.2 8086:282a 1028:02ef 10/ 10/0xa8 D V ahci vmhba0

a lspci -v gives me

Intel Corporation Mobile 82801 SATA RAID Controller (vmhba0)
RAID bus controller Mass storage controller:

Class 0104: 8086:282a 1028:02ef

and since I'm now booting off the USB when I run an fdisk -l I see the USB but the internal harddrive is still a no show.

FIXED!

{ RE: I do get a failure at the very beginning with the NIC not loading on boot. When the NIC fails to boot, then lvmdriver also fails as part of sysboot and then I get an error from sysboot: 34.storage-drivers returned failure. }

So, I loaded ESXi 4.1 U1 and added customized OEM.tgz, etc ... and watched it blow up time and again.

Traced this back to the exscfg-rescan @ the BEGINNING of the install process. It is deleting the pci.ids and simple.map and re-creating based on what it finds in the pciid directory. So I created a tg3.xml and packed this into the OEM.tgz file and I was able to get 4.1 installed to the harddrive. First boot failed, of course, so I used CENTOS Live CD to add tg3.xml to the OEM.tgz on the Hypervisor1 partition and I am currently building a virtual machine. :-) Yay!

Very smart!!! I have been looking for a solution but my issue is I can get this to work. My issue! would it be possible to share the install ISO you created?

Thank you for the consideration!
