Post ESXI4 on M3N78-EM
Hi all,

I have installed Esxi4 on an Asus M3N78-EM motherboard. Out of the box the SATA isn't recognised, thus I added the PCI id's to the simple.map and pci.id

After reboot I get a PSOD (attached) From another thread somebody said it might be that I set the wrong permission. (also see viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5&start=10)

Anyone has an idea what to do so I wont have the PSOD anymore?

With ESXi 4.0 pci.ids is now in /etc/vmware.

so you are saying I should change the oem.tgz in the following way?

1) cd /tmp/
2) mkdir -p oem/etc/vmware
3) cd oem/etc/vmware
4) cp /etc/vmware/simple.map simple.map
5) vi simple.map
--- add the necessary PCI data for your devices
6) close vi - press ESC and enter :wq
7) cp /etc/vmware/pci.ids pci.ids
8) vi pci.ids
-- add the necessary description for your devices (this will be displayed in the console and VI Client)
9) close vi - press ESC and enter :wq
10) cd /tmp/oem
11) chown -R 201:201 ./etc
12) chmod -R 755 ./etc
13) chmod 644 ./etc/vmware/simple.map
14) chmod 644 ./etc/vmware/pci.ids
15) tar -cvzf oem.tgz etc
16) cp oem.tgz /bootbank/oem.tgz
17) cd /bootbank/
18) chmod 755 oem.tgz
19) reboot the host

EDIT:

this didn't work. No PSOD but the SATA ports are not recognised, where as they were under 3.5

using lspci -p I get this response:

00:09.00 10de:0ad4 1043:82f2 5/ 5/0x69 A V vmhba2

so it is being seen as a port but the module isn't loaded. I set simple.map to load sata_nv.o --> didn't work
ahci --> didn't work either

Hi all,

update: it worked!!!!!

you have to perform the actions as describe above, with one exception. You have to set the mode to SATA in the bios and use the following for your simple.map and pci.ids:

10de:0ad0 0000:0000 storage sata_nv.0

pci.ids:

0ad0 MCP78 SATA Controller

EDIT : this oem.tgz file will get the driver loaded for the MCP78 controller, but the driver still seems to have a problem seeing attached HDs. Search for MCP78 to see other threads on this issue.

I tried to Install ESX (not ESXi) on a M3N78.

It recognized the controller, but it didn't see hard drives...

I will try ESXi next week-end

Great, thanks for the file!

But that only helps to detect the controller exactly, but there are no harddisks shown.

Do you use new harddisks (empty) oder harddisks which are used together with ESXi 3.5 before (containing some vm's)?
