I haven't tried this, but it might work for you. First we need to get past the install.

1) Boot up with the CD until you get the error.
2) Then load the tg3 driver
3) then run vmkload_mod lvmdriver
4) then restart the ESXi install process - see step 5 here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_inst ... _drive.php

I'm not sure it'll get you through the install process, but if it does it'll be much faster than trying to add an oem.tgz file.

If it does work, we'll then have to boot ESXi from disk and it'll fail again. At that point we can change simple.map on disk in a way that gets it backed up into the system backup file for ESXi.

Just Step 5? cd /usr/lib/vmware/installer and press enter. Then enter the command: python ThinESX.py.

I got some error.

Code:
/usr/lib/vmware/installer# python ThinESX.py
/lib/python2.5/vmkctl.py:5: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module _vmkctl: This Python has API version 1013,  module _vmkctl has version 1012.

PS: the steps you advised are want to continue the ESXi installer and install the ESXi into Harddrive (only without NIC driver), so that we only need to may some change on Harddrive, right?

Additionally,
I open the Simple.map and got some sense about it.

Does mean that I just need to add a record like
Code:
14e4:1684 0000:0000 network tg3.o
into simple.map?

I'm going to modify simple.map in ESXi install CD for a try.

For the install you'll want to add oem.tgz to the root of the CD and also edit isolinux.cfg to include oem.tgz. See also the scripts here for creating a new ISO image - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=206.

Thanks Dave,

Since my NICs are listed after vmkload_mod tg3.o and I can find my NICs' information in pci.ids. Can I just modify the simple.map on install CD?
If yes, how?

I'm trying with http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/customize_oem_tgz.php
Case 1, Modifying oem.tgz when using the install CD

But Varazir's website seems unreachable.
I'm not sure how to modify/Add oem.tgz into install CD

So far, just able to install ESXi from USB flash drive

I tried the site - http://varazir.mine.nu/esxi/ and it's working from here.

But if you can't get to it then you just need to edit simple.map.

I only find the simple.map after lvmdriver failure and access console.
But how to modify before installation?
I failed to do so with http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/customize_oem_tgz.php

Could you give some advice?

You mention that you got it to install from USB. What did you do for that?

Essentially you'll want to create the oem.tgz file with the edited simple.map file (and optionally an update pci.ids file).

Add that to the root of the install CD and then after the install you have to copy it to the HyperVisor1 partition. The script from Vazasir takes care of updating the ISO for you - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4

Finally, I got my ESXi installed.
1. follow http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_USB_install.php to create a bootable USB stick with ESXi install files.
2. refer to http://www.vm-help.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1272 to create your own oem.tgz, in my case, I use attached ...oem.tgz and add my NICs information into simple.map.
3. copy oem.tgz to USB stick /, and add
Code:
--- oem.tgz
into syslinux.cfg, so that oem.tgz will be loaded while boot machine from USB stick.
4. Boot from USB stick, then will get ESX install into Harddrive without error.
5. reboot after install successful.
6. Boot system with a bootable USB key, then copy oem.tgz into Hypervisor1 partition.
7. Reboot system, everything OK!

Realy appreciate Dave's patient and great support.
After this, I not only fix the issue, but also learnt a lot of ESXi.
Thank you all.
