Post How to fix USB ESXi boot (with Plop)
Hi to all,

My problem: One of my new ESXi hosts has a buggy BIOS. In the booting process of the ESXi in a USB pendrive at some point the process fails with a boot error (no problem to install the ESXi in the same drive using the same computer). Nevertheless, if I boot using the Plop Boot manager the ESXi boots without any problem.

I checked ALL parameters related to USB configuration in the BIOS. No solution at all!
With Plop I can boot without any problem.

Perhaps you like to use this hack to improve your boot speed or to fix booting problems (like me). You can test different configurations of Plop pressing the <TAB> key at boot (when the screen goes black). Try to boot disabling USB 2.0 or with mode1, if your system hangs when Plop loads the drivers. Modify "syslinux.cfg" if you need!

Inside the .ZIP you can found the README.TXT with these comments:

Code:
How to fix USB ESXi boot
========================

1) Mount the filesystem "Hypervisor0" (partition 4) of your USB drive on any system
2) Rename "syslinux.cfg" to "original.cfg"
3) Extract the files from this package in the root (you can remove README.TXT)
4) Edit entry "usb1=2" in "syslinux.cfg" if you need it! (try =0 or =1)

Reboot and enjoy!

Explanation:
This fix uses Plop Boot manager to load custom USB drivers (BIOS mode).
The Plop is loaded using the SYSLINUX (3.x) in the ESXi install.
Plop install the drivers and reloads the Syslinux bootloader.
The ifplop.c32 module checks the second boot and reads the original config.
Using the original config the ESXi system is booted.
(If you need to modify the boot configuration change "original.cfg" not "syslinux.cfg")

Best regards!

Gigabyte mobo doesn't like to boot ESXi USB, giving "boot error". What's yours?

Partially guessed: ASrock with AMD 6-core!

With my hack, you can boot ESXi USB in a Gigabyte/ASrock/etc. mobo without a trouble... :o
