Post [solved] How to add external USB HDD to guest?
Hello,

I have a question re. an external USB HDD which I cannot (do not know how to) connect to my guest OS (Windows XP Home 32-bit). The free vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 4.1 U1) only offers Windows XP Pro (not Home), but the Home version works too. However, I need some help how to see the USB HDD in the guest (it is connected to the host, and I have also added the USB controller to the host). When I try to add a USB device to the guest VM, the external USB HDD physically connected to the host does not appear. Does this work somehow? Or is this feature not supported (yet)?
Sorry if I have misplaced my question in the wrong sub-forum, but the others did not look 100% right to me either. If some of the mods thinks different, please feel free to move my post. Thanks a lot - also for any hints re. my problem.

Just to clarify - have you added a USB controller to the VM?

Does it work if you try it with other VMs?

Yes, I have added a USB controller before, but after that no USB device is shown to be selected.
Yes, I have tried this also with my other VM (Debin Squeeze), but same problem there: Only an "Alcor Micro Mass Storage Device" is shown.
In the Windows guest VM this is then displayed with four different drive letters, so I believe that this is rather the internal card reader (connected as USB device). It has four drive letters assigned, because it has four different slots (for different USB card formats).
But, alas, no external USB HDD (Toshiba) is shown (it is formatted with FAT32).

EDIT - arghl!

I tripped into a probably typical newbee pitfall: The external USB HDD is not connected to my host, but to my notebook on the side on which runs the vSphere client. So this cannot work of course, and the "Alcor Micro Mass Storage Device" is the multi-card reader slot of the notebook and not of the host (Desktop with Intel DQ45CB mobo - see signature).

So this thread can be closed, I guess. Sorry once more for my stupidity.
