SATA RAID contoller for large capacity disks?
Hi All,
The disks in my ESXi 4.1 host are around two thirds full, so am starting to investigate what people are using for hardware RAID controllers that are able to support large capacity drives (i.e. above 2.19TB) which work with generic hardware. As I have a Dell PERC 6/i I was just going to upgrade to the new H700, however I've read that these adapters will only work with "Dell Approved" hard drives so am now looking elsewhere.
Any suggestions?

So are you trying to use a single 3 TB drive with it? I would stick to the LSI family and you'll get the best hardware monitoring.

I currently have 8 x 1.5TB drives, so the plan will be to eventually replace them with 8 x 3TB drives (or whatever is the most competitive price point at the time). I was thinking I would stay with LSI and was looking at the MegaRAID SAS 9265-8i, however it doesn't appear to be listed in the VMware HCL.

Excellent! Looked up the compatibility guide and see there are a few 3TB drives on the list too. At my present rate of consumption I won't need to upgrade my storage for at least 6 months, so hopefully in that time the cost of hardware comes down a bit as currently It'd cost me around $2,800AUD for the upgrade (controller & 8 x 3TB HDD's).
