I have installed ESXi on a USB key then I readded the VMs to the Inventory.
But now I have problems with network in guests.
For example, in a Windows 7 64bit guest, the NIC can't get network settings via DHCP and if I set them manually, if I try to surf to http:/www.google.com, I get the folling error:

Error message: 400
Bad Request: Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request

If I ping http://www.google.com the host is reacheable and all the packets are received.
I have already tried to reassign a new NIC (Intel E1000) to the Guest but the problem persists.
I checked the Networking settings of the host and everything seems OK


What should I check?

I booted also an Ubuntu Server, I can ping http://www.google.com but if I try to connect with PuTTY, I get the error:

Incoming packet was garbled on decryption

What sort of NIC are you running this through? How are VM to VM communications? Can the ESXi host download something (use wget in the console)?

You mention a restore, what exactly happened around that? Is this strictly a standalone host or have you used vCenter with it and perhaps vShield Zones?

I tried to change the E1000 with the VMXNET 3 but the problem persists.
I tried to re-create the .vmx file but nothing.
I tried to power on 2 other VMs (Ubuntu Desktop and Fedora) and... the network works!
So the problem is either in the host that deliberately blocks the Windows 7 and Ubuntu Server VM or in the VMs themselves.

If I use wget from the host, it works and even I can reach it via SSH from internet.

I moved my installation from hard disk to USB key. The hard disk has been formetted and then added as a datastore.
It is a standalone host, with free license, I don't have vCenter and I don't know what is vShield Zones :/

What do you mean with "VM to VM communications"?
They are all in the same vSwitch 0 and in the same Virtual Machine Port Group as you can see in the screenshot posted above.

EDIT: I re-added another VM, a Windows Server 2008 R2, and it is affected by the same problem

will dnsflush work? with a ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew?

Can the VMs on the host communicate with each other OK? Are you using a custom oem.tgz file?

@mannyeng: what do you mean? In the host?
I don't have any problem there as I can even reach it from internet.

@Dave: if I set network settings manually, both Windows 7 and WinServer2008 can ping either LAN or google.com and they can browse each other shared folders!
It seems that this 3 VMs (Win7, WinServer2008, Ubuntu Server) are in a different LAN (I don't know how to call it ).

So with a static IP you're fine, but DHCP doesn't work (either in getting an address or browsing)?

With static IP I can browser other VMs but I get the same error from http://www.google.com with different browsers:

With DHCP I get an IP address like this:
169.254.53.2
255.255.0.0

Yesterday evening I tried to move "Win 7" from "VM Network" to "VM Network 2" and then again to "VM Network" but the problem persists.

I don't know if it can be useful but this is my /etc/hosts

Problem solved! It was all related to the NIC driver -_-
The only one that works for me, it is the one provided by frutis here.

I replied also in the thread RTL8111/8168 and P55 integr. SATA Ctrl. (AHCI) for ESX 4 to advice people!

I had the same issues. The driver in the long thread would allow me to boot but my Windows VM's couldn't get to the DHCP. This one from Frutis works for me no problems!
