You'll want to find out the exact model of controller. If it's something like an Intel ICH* or ICH*R then you should be OK. But note that ESX(i) doesn't support software RAID controllers so with an Intel ICH*R the best you'll be able to see is the individual drives.

On the board is a P55 Chipset with the next specification

New Intel® P55 Express Chipset
• Intel® 82P55 Platform Controller Hub (PCH)
• Intel® Matrix Storage Technology (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10)
• Six onboard SATA port

It'll likely be an ICH10R controller - http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/ma ... age_sb.htm - so you'll be able to install to the individual drives, but ESXi won't see any RAID arrays that you create with the controller. That said, if you search the forum for P55 you'll find a few users that had to modify oem.tgz to get ESXi to recognize their system's sata controller.

You can get by with a fake raid controller like my ICH7. If you just want to install ESXi and play with it, it will work.

I have recently purchases an LSI raid controller but have yet to install it on any of my servers. Just not enough time in the day!

I have changed my computer to the next specs

Board Asus P6T SE
Processor Intel Core I7-920-2.66GHz S1366 / FSB1333 8MB Cache
Memory Kingston 6GB Kit (3x2GB) DDR3 1333 non-ECC
Seagate Maxtor DM23 500GB HDD 7k2rpm 16MB SATA
Video Point of View GeForce 9400GT 512MB Silencer PCI-E
Network 2 Intel PRO/1000GT Desktop NIC Manageble, Leadfree

Is this a better computer fot working with ESXi 4.0

greeting

You should be OK with this. The specs here - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131386 - show an Intel ICH10R controller. You won't get RAID with the ICH10R, but ESXi should have no problem with individual disks.
