Post HP Compaq 6005 SFF Pro - cannot see local HD
Hey there,

Worked on this one for a few days, don't normally post in forums but you guys have a lot of good knowledge here and I'm pretty stumped.

I'm trying to spin up ESXi 4.1 on an HP Compaq 6005 SFF Pro desktop, thanks to the whitelist HCL I used a custom oem.tgz posted and got around the NIC not being picked up, and it installed no problems.

However, every time I start it I have to punch "vmkload_mod tg3" as I haven't gotten simple.map to load the PCI ID properly, not a big deal I'm working on that. Where I'm really stuck is I can't see the local drives, either the one I'm running ESXi from or the secondary I had planned to use as a datastore. They are both SATA and show up in the BIOS, configured for AHCI, but "fdisk -l" shows nothing, completely blank.

"lspci -v | grep storage" returns with
000:000:17.0 SATA controller Mass storage contoller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700 SATA Controller [AHCI Mode] [vmhba0]

So this tells me that it's loading up the ahci modules just fine thanks to the default simple.map, but no idea why I can't see anything with fdisk.

Additionally, running "esxcfg-mpath -l" shows that paths to vmhba0 and vmhba32 are both dead, not sure if that means anything specific or if it's just a representation that I don't have any disks.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried different SATA ports. It's been the case with some 6 port MBs that only certain ones have worked with the drivers that come with ESXi.

Only 4 ports on this desktop, but I've tried switching them around and nothing.

Just a thought, perhaps I've done something wrong here. When I boot from my modified ESXi install disc, I can go to the console and see that the tg3 driver is loaded, esxcfg-nics -l shows the NIC properly, and fdisk -l shows both drives, which I can choose either one to install to. It's only once I install I have to manually load the tg3 driver and fdisk -l shows nothing.

Is it possible that the install disc loads some driver that the image once installed does not? Or maybe there's more to the oem.tgz I downloaded that doesn't get pushed onto the install?

Here's the tgz that I used, renamed to oem.tgz and I edited the ISO with MagicISO to place the file on the disc.

esx41upd1-sff6005.tgz

I've been reading about this customized ESXi installer script that everyone seems to be using, this may be part of my problem so I'll try that next.

On the install image there are 2 copies of oem.tgz. One in the root folder and one buried in the dd image that gets installed. It sounds like that 2nd copy hasn't been updated. The install script takes care of updating both copies of the file.

After messing around with the custom installation script, got it working. Wasn't able to get it to install with the custom oem.tgz via USB, seemed to still rely on a DVD to finish, and once finished it was missing the tgz.

However, booting straight from USB instead of installing from it worked perfectly, so I'm good to go. Lesson learned, don't try to add the oem.tgz directly, use the script. Thanks for the help, much appreciated!
