Using a supported network card solved the problem. The system is up and running now.

Using a oem.tgz file with the Realtek RTL8111E module (r8168.o) works too.
I attached the oem.tgz for ESXi 4.1 update 1.

When you used the supported NIC it automatically detected the harddrive as well w/o any changes?? At what mode did you leave the sata ports at, AHCI?

With the supported NIC, the official ESXi 4.1 Update 1 can be installed without a problem.
I used AHCI for "PCH SATA Control Mode" in BIOS.

The ESXi 4.1 update 1 recognizes disks (IDE or AHCI), but only if you have a supported network card.

Use AHCI. This should give you more performance (NCQ is enabled for example).

Just like to update this, I got it up and running with the update1, I think I may have under estimated my memory requirements, 8GB aint cutting it.
