Post ESXi 4.1 with custom oem unable to load module
Hello Everyone,

I've been trying to install unsuccessfully ESXi 4.1 on an HP laptop (8440p) with an Intel 82577LM NIC. I realized this required a custom driver, so i used Varazir's script to generate an install based on a NIC driver (e1000e.o) that I got from CentOS 5.1 installation with the driver.

The issue I am having is that after I run the install, i get the "vmkctl.HostCtlException Unable to Load module /usr/lib/vmware/vmkmode/vmfs3: Failure..." error.

I used alt-f1 to get into the prompt.

The command lspci -p |grep 10ea (the NIC id) results in:
000:000:25.0 8086:10ea 103c:172a 10/0xb0 A V vmnic 0

the command lspci | grep network
000:000:25.0 Network controller: Intel Coporation 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection [vmnic0]
000:067:00;0 Network controller: Intel Corporation

But the command esxcfg-nics -l only gets me the headers with no actual NICS.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

This is a draft doc, but it'll explain the requirements for an ESXi driver - http://www.vm-help.com/esx41/developing_for_ESXi.php.

Check out the "Drivers and Tools" download section for vSphere on VMware.com. There may be an updated e1000e driver.

Thanks for the reply Dave. So far there has been no update to include de 82577 driver. I've been following the guides, and since there was a previous e1000e drive, i figured the best way to produce a new driver was to overwrite the .c files on the VM OSS then build the new .o driver.

What I'm curious is that the e1000e driver comes with lots of other files (like mac.c, phy.c, etc.). I am re-doing this now. Do you think the e1000e.o is enough for the board to work?

Thanks,

Hey Dave, got it to work. Followed the directions with a different driver:
http://wadenick.posterous.com/vmware-es ... -installed

I had seen this before in the forum, however I changed the pci and simple map file before running the script and it didn't work. Changed it through the script worked fine!

Thanks again!
