Post [Solved] I'll try to create boot usb drive but I can't
Hi,

I'm new in ESXi.

I want to install ESXi 4.1 in a Asus Sabertooth with Core i7 950, 12 GB of ram, one Intel Pro/1000 GT and Intel CT Desktop EXPI9301CT.

I try to create a usb boot for install ESXi in a hard disk.

I do it very times the procedures of http://www.vm-help.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4. I do it 4 option, but when I boot with usb I only can see the messages:

Code:
boot: Could not find kernel image linux
or
Code:
Missing operating system

I don't want to use integrated network card and hardware raid, and I understand that it is not necessary in my case use oem.tgz, but If anyone belive that I wrong, please said me wich I'll do it.

Thank you so much in advanced.

Best regards

It should work, honest I haven't tested that option in some time, could be broken.

What you can do it to create a empty oem file and just use option 2.

What OS and language are you using to run the script on ?

Hi,

I try to create a usb with virtual ubuntu desktop in english instalation but with spanish keyboard in vmware workstation.

I'm finally I created the usb to boot with usb. But now, before appears the Esxi menu, the instalation fails with message:

Code:
Module: oem.tgz
Loading: oem.tgz
Fatal: cannot open tgz

I understand that I need to create an oem.tgz file, but I don't understand how.

Of paragraf "Custom oem.tgz" Method 2, I understand that I'll find the PCI ID, but I don't know find the driver.
I'll find the driver on manufacturer page and select linux driver?

About the instructions of ID in the steps of pci.id customization, I have this doubt:

I need install Intel Pro/1000 GT and I found:
Code:
8086  Intel Corporation
      107C xxx

Where I put xxx I don't know what I putting something like "Network Controller"?

I have similar doubt wiht simple.map file customization:

I don't know how to indicate my driver, because in this example you talk about storage driver but what I'll put after .

Code:
8086:107C ....

Thank you so much for your patience.

Best regards

If you don't think you need an oem.tgz just copy over the one I've attached. You could also just edit boot.cfg or isolinux.cfg to remove the entry to oem.tgz but it might cause issues later on during upgrades.

If you just want to boot the installer from a USB flash device take a look at this - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_USB_install.php.

Hi! To create bootable flash try to use unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
Make sure that the system is booted from the usb, then have to deal with oem.tgz

Hi,

Before I tried with the procedure of this forum I check with Unetbootin, but with this tool I had an error when ESXi installation tried to read the image.

It is possible that in the steps of "Linux:Bash script to create a custom installation" are something wrong?

In my last test I had been tried to install ESXi directly from CD without customize anything and I could install ESXi 4.1 without any errors and vmware recognize all networks adapters and storage controllers, but with usb it couldn't be possible even when I edited syslinux.cfg and I removed "--- oem.tgz" of the file.

Best regards and thanks for your efforts!

Just to clarify are you wanting to install ESXi from USB or to boot ESXi from USB?
