Post Low cost esxi 4
Greetings everyone,

I am trying to build a test esxi box on either amd or intel proc platform, i know going through the HCL list here there are a lot of mobos,

i would like to ask if anyone can recommend a cheap build, i am not gonna be doing heavy stuff mostly dev/testing so would appreciate your advice.

I dont have a budget per se, but i am trying to keep the cost minimum.

I realize AMD is competitevly priced, and the diff in performance is near comparison? if not better than core iX's

has any one tried quad port intel pro 1gig gt cards?

Thanks.
pa

I would stick with what you know and you're comfortable with. Typically for dev/test you'll run out of memory before you exhaust CPU.

are the GT cards quad PCI-X or PCIe? I've had success with the quad MT's as well as a Silicom quad port PCIe (which contains two Broadcom chips).

This is the latest system I built:

Intel i5 650 (dual core, four threads)
Intel BOXDQ57TM (board works out of the box with a custom installer for the Intel DM GigE NIC)
8 GB DDR3 (2x4GB sticks)
2x Intel PCIe 1000PT
1x Intel PCI 1000GT

4 NIC's, up to 16 GB of RAM should be plenty for at least 7-8 VM's depending on memory requirement.

surrealillusion, can you please elaborate on the "custom installer"? how to build this custom installer / where to get it? thanks for your help :-)

A custom oem.tgz file was used - viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2263&hilit=BOXDQ57TM - so they had to use the script by Varazir (see the sticky posts in the Customizing OEM.tgz forum for that).
