Post ESXi v4.1 U1 - Phenom II X6 or Xeon X34xx series
I am able to infer from the VMware compatibility guide that Intel Xeon 34xx series CPUs are supported for VMDirectPath, Fault Tolerance, vMotion & DRS.

I want to check whether it would be good to go with Xeon series (4 cores, 8 threads) or with the Phenom II X6 CPUs (6 cores).

I am preparing for VCAP-DCA exam, hence I need the following things to work so that I can practice for the exam.

vMotion, DRS, HA, Fault Tolerance and VMDirectPath

I will be assembling my own ESXi whiteboxes with 32 GB RAM support compatible motherboards.(2 units).

I would appreciate if any of them can show me the right way.

VMdirectpath is a chipset feature so you'll want to find a MB that supports that.

For FT compatible CPUS you can see this 'whitebox' list - http://www.gabesvirtualworld.com/list-o ... ible-cpus/.

Thanks for replying, Dave.

I am certain that the 890FX series of chipsets from AMD support VMDirectPath, although I am unsure whether Phenom II X6 CPUs support VMware Fault Tolerance.

If someone can confirm that Phenom II X6 CPUs can support vMotion, DRs, HA & FT, I will be assembling 2 whiteboxes with immediate effect.
