Post Adaptec AIC-9410 RAID does not detect by ESX 4.1
Hi

I am trying to install vSphere 4.1 on my TYAN server and during the install , when it reach to Storage selection page , it shows no storage and it seems that ESX cannot detect my storage.
I have an on-board Adaptec AIC-9410 RAID controller with 2 SAS hard disks.
I had searched over the web and there was no result , I am not familiar with vmware command prompt and in this forum was a topic which said some tips about commands during installation but I was unable to reach command prompt with esx 4.1.
I don't know if any driver required?
How can I find and load any required diver?

Please help

thanks

Once you get the install error, try this
1) Press ALT+F1.
2) Login with root (password is blank)
3) run lspci | less and identify the storage controller. You'll see the bus ID for the controller.
4) run lspci -p | less to use the bus ID to get the PCI id.

Could you post that PCI id?

Hi Dave,

There is no error at the installation , just at the page which I should choose a place to install the ESX ,there is nothing (blank) and pressing Alt+F1 just switch to a screen without command prompt, just shows some sort of information of what happened in the previous installation stages and anything I type and enter it just goes to the next line , like an editor and nothing happens (I already tried as you explained in another topics).
I tried Alt+F2 and it shows me a blank command prompt so I tried to login with the credential you said but it gives me wrong password error. I did not set any password on it.
I tried the lspci command without logging in and it showed me a list of devices, and based on your tips it shows the following info for AIC-9410:

9005 041f 0000 0000

Using lspci -p shows some tips and info about lspci command switches.

Now what should I do?

Thank you for your attention anyway.

OK - it's listed here so a driver should load up - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/Hardware_support.php. When you run lspci -p do you see a module listed for the controller?

That's the point! I don't know how and what driver should I load?
Where can I find the drivers?
When I run lspci -p command it shows me lspci switches list which said the -p switch should be used if you want use another directory than normal PCI directory .
When I used lspci command alone it gives me :

03:07.0 RAID Bus Controller: Adaptec AIC-9410 (rev 09)

Then I used the lspci with -n switch and it shows me following information for the 03:07.0 address which previous command told me :

0104:9005:041F (rev 09)

Now my question is where can I find the related driver? and how should I load it? what's the procedure?

Thanks for your help again.

Simple.map (see the link above) will tell ESXi which driver to load for the device.

When I run lspci -p I get this output. The module column tells you which driver has been loaded. If it is blank, then the driver failed to load for some reason. If your devices is not listed with a name of vmhbaX then you have another issue.

Do you have any idea why this command does not shows the same result as yours?

As my server has two RAID controller (one SAS , one SATA) so I tried to install the ESX on SATA RAID controller which is a Server Works HT1000 model, and unfortunately when I made a RAID group the ESX could not detect it too and when I delete the RAID group and set as SATA native mode , the ESX detected the SATA hards so I installed it as a test.
As I already tried to find the Simple.map file on the installation CD and I was unable to, I tried to check this file after installing ESX in the address that you provided in your article. and the "9005 041f 0000 0000 storage adp94xx.o AIC-9410 " was included in the file.
I am so disappointed of this issue, what could be the cause?
Do you have any idea or anything else which I can test to clarify the reason of this issue?
Please HELP !

The HT1000 is a software RAID controller so you won't get RAID with ESX(i).

Could you reboot the host and then post a copy of /var/log/messages?

Post Re: Adaptec AIC-9410 RAID does not detect by ESX 4.1
Hi Dave,

I have tried the ESXi instead of ESX and the result was same.
I tried the F1 and the command prompt showed up and this time it asks me about login informaion so I logged in as root and blank password as you said and I did run lspci -p |less like you told and this time it shows me the same result as you showed me and in the line for the adaptec it shows:

000:003:07.0 9005:041f 9005:041f 5/ 5/0xa0 A V vmhba1

it seems that the Module column is empty , right?
so as you said the driver should be failed to load.
I checked the /var/log/messages and I found that it sad the driver adp94xx.o has been loaded succesfully. it shows exactly the loading of driver for 9005:041f ...

as I am not so familiar with linux commands I don't know how can I send you this file?

I am so confused of what could be the cause of this issue :(

one more question is that when I create a RAID 1 , should I initialize it? or it could be used immediately ?

I am just checking all the possibilities :D

please HELP (F1)

If the module isn't listed then the driver either didn't load for it and didn't recognize it. Could you post the messages log file after a reboot.

Generally you should be able to use an array immediately, but I generally wait until it has completely initialized.
