Post AM2+ motherboard for whitebox
Hi,

I'm looking for a whitebox, based on a AM2+ socket.
I'm having trouble finding a motherboard, if possible with Nic and Sata supported.

Hardware raid would be great as well as 8 GB ram support.

Any ideas?

TIA
Martijn

Hello Martijn, personally I like Asus MBs and if looking for one to support AM2+ I would stick with an nVidia chipset. Something with an AMD storage controller or Realtek NIC won't work.

Have you looked through the white box lists for ESXi 3.5 and 4.0? If buying something that isn't on the list I would look at a storage controller that is a bit older. The drivers with ESXi don't tend to be the latest and greatest so an MCP controller that is a bit old will have the best chance of working. In case you can't find a MB with a NIC, just plan on dropping in an Intel Pro 1000 GT.

ESXi 4.0 supports the onboard NIC of my Asus M3N78-VM out of the box.

Thanks for your reply.
What about the sata controller?

Thats the problem at the moment. You can find 3 threads in this forum discussing the compatibility. The controller will be detected (updated PCI.IDS and SIMPLE.MAP), but some people got no access to the attached harddisks.

I hope we will get a solution in the next days.

Hello

may be its funny, but i have problem with local Datrastore on my system too.
i have AM2+ Motherboard which support AM3 CPU as weel, .... (you can find it here)

after cheating in installation, i can't access my local datastore on same HDD which I'm installed my VMware, but it can reach any other HDD in this system easily. (may be it's the result of cheating ;) )
it need some works for installing ESXi 3.5 U4 on it, but ESXi 4.0 installed easily and fast without any question or modification.
anyway i didn't see any other problem in this system till now, i think it could be one of your option. ;)

So with ESXi 4.0 it was OK to recognize local storage and NIC? Were you still using a USB flash drive to boot?
