Post Hardware Combo to use...
I am sorry to say that I have not found any combination of stuff that I can buy on newegg.com for example, or have at home, that works with ESXi... may anyone please help? If you have made a purchase recently at newegg.com that works great with ESXi Update 1 (motherboard with all the stuff on it preferably) please let me know the model etc. of the motherboard. I would like support for 8 GB of ram at least; for my home lab (so I sont have a corporate budget for this). I did look at the Whitebox HCL... but... not so hlpfull to me anyway. Maybe I do not know how to use it very well...

Here is my system I thought would work but the SATA controlers are not supported.

Do you have the option to change the mode of the sata controller?

I'd suggest looking through the white box specs forums. The whitebox list will have the same info (it's a few weeks behind) but in that forum you can go through things chronologically.

Last year I got a couple of Supermicro MBs (x8dlt-3f) that work OK but they're a bit on the pricy side.

So far I have looked at several entries in the HCL list; searching newegg... there is one phrase I see every time: This product is currently unavailable. Is there a list of items that you can actually buy if you want to run ESX?

I would hate to have to use Hyper-V... but my options are sliming down... Help!

The Dell PowerEdge T100 is actually on Dell Compatibility Matrix:

Dual Core Intel® Xeon® E3110, 3.0 GHz, 6MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB
8GB, DDR2, 800MHz, 4x2GB,Dual Ranked DIMMs
160GB 7.2K RPM SATA 3Gbps 3.5-in Cabled Hard Drive
On-Board Single Gigabit Network Adapter
16x DVD Drive, Internal

$460 + Tax + S/H

Search Dell Small Bis. for "BEDAVAE2"
Coupon Code: BCBP2VBL0HXHWD

The prices start at $269 ... but there is no way to tell
if the lower end Pentium E5400 or C2D E7400 will be the
versions that support VT.

Even better than the above:

Dell PowerEdge T110

Intel Xeon X3430 2.4GHz Quad Core Processor
2GB RAM
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
DVD-ROM
Gigabit Ethernet

$389 + $25 S/H + Tax

Note: Upgrading the ram to 8GB will take the price up .. but
buy third party and you'll still come out better.
