Is it true, that non-free ESX 4.0 can be installed on more ATX hardware models, than ESXi? Or is it pure bullshit?
I'm using ESX and I want to virtualize and route LAN through ESX 4.0 host. Additional PCI network card (Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop Adapter) is not displayed at configuration's "network adapters".
I take a look at the 4.0 Whitebox HCL list, and ESX seems not supporting of any regular PCI network cards. I wish not to return to ESXi.
Why you don't list ESX combability posts at this forum? I'm running ESX 4.0 on MSI M2N-E.

For the most part people running vSphere on whiteboxes are spending $0 on licensing so the choice ends up being ESXi. Where I find an ESX posting like yours it does get added to the list.
What does the vmkernel log show about loading the e1000 driver? You might also want to experiment with esxcfg-module http://communities.vmware.com/message/1430032#1430032 and check for IRQ sharing for the NIC
