Hey everyone, I decided to jump into the deep end and try out ESXi. I mainly use it for testing and upskilling myself. Previously have been using Virtualbox and Vmware Server 2. I thought I would share my setup on these forums as it has proven to be quite a good build.
I didnt want to use any of my current machines so I decided to build a cheap and nasty machine using parts from fleabay. Specifications below.
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8GHzMemory:
4GB DDR2 (2x 2GB Crucial Ballistix)Mainboard:
Intel DQ963GS - Info Here http://www.viglen.co.uk/viglen/Attachments/products/Intel%20DQ963GS_Motherboard_Spec_Sheet_Jan2007.pdfBios Version:
Updated to latest - v.1754Chipset:
ICH8 - Set to AHCI not IDE/LegacyNetwork:
Intel Gigabit using Intel® 82566DMVideo:
SigmaTel* STAC9227 - Disabled in biosHard Disk Setup:
160GB and 320GB SATA drives plugged into ICH8 controller
This build worked straight out of the box for ESXi 4. It detected all hard drives and network card with no problems. Performance has been excellent although I will be adding more ram at a later date. The CPU does not support VT, although if I do go down the path of using a VT enabled processor the bios does have the options to enable it.
I hope this info has proven useful
