You may load ESXi but ESX will not work.
I have DG33BU, all NICs are visible but PCI-e NICs will never work in ESX. The problem is in console OS. Since ESXi doesn't have Console OS, it works.

i did a search on the pci-e nic and found something interesting
someone said version 4 is using 3.5 drivers for e1000 drivers & might run into pb with 4.0 so might have to wait for updates :(

Hi,

Both my boards work with ESX and ESXi.

On ESX I get the "reboot hang bug". You get a Synchronizing SCSI cache .... but it does not reboot.

On ESXi it worked perfectly until I applied the latest patches. Then I could no longer connect via the VMware Infrastructure Client.

I've been wondering about this.

Does anyone know if VMware purposely discontinues support for older servers in order to get people to purchase the latest hardware from their partner vendors?

I know that this is a whitebox forum, but it's just a thought....

Certification is a vender led process so typically you don't see them certifying their old gear for a new version. VMware had supported Intel 100 cards with ESXi 3.5 but dropped support in 4.0 so they don't typically drop driver support until the hardware is old.

This might help with issues with the e1000e driver - viewtopic.php?f=13&t=238&p=4057&hilit=module#p4057.
