Thats interesting, glad I know that now.

Is it possible to connect via WinSCP and copy / add VM's from a Windows PC? as opposed to using a share to achieve it?

Can you you also burn a cd from within a VM using the host DVD Drive?

Thanks for the info :P this info is hard to find in the esxi forums.

See here for SSH access - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_enable_SSH.php - once you enable it you can use WinSCP.

The CD device presented to a guest is CD/DVD- ROM only and you can burn CD/DVDs. The exception would be if you could do a pass through SCSI device or use VMDirectPath.

Thats great.

Also apart from the fact one is free is there any major reason to use Vmware Vsphere V4?

:)

It all depends on the functionality you need. If you want to manage your ESXi host with vCenter, then you need at least an Essentials license (plus a vCenter license). If you want HA then you need Essentials Plus or higher (plus vCenter).

For a home user there doesnt seem to be that much of an advantage!

:)

Does the same apply for USB flash drives (plugged into usb on host), can they be used within a guest VM?

Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated!

At this point there's no support for any USB devices in guests.

Well the goods news, is everything was work with the asus motherboard, no issues so far (apart from the onboard NIC, not sure if there is a workaround as yet?)

Any issues with the Intel PRO 10/100/1000 MT Quad-Port NIC? (Im using a dual port version at the moment until I get one of these, as long as there are no issues)
