Post Intel DG35EC
I just installed ESXi 4 on the Intel DG35EC microATX motherboard without a problem. Here is the hardware with item numbers from newegg.com:

  • Intel DG35EC Motherboard $83
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80569Q9550 - Retail --Item #: N82E16819115041 $229.99
  • HITACHI 0A38016 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -- Item #: N82E16822145233 $74.99
  • Intel PWLA8391GTL 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI PRO/1000 GT Low Profile Desktop Adapter 1 x RJ45
  • OCZ Gold 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Quad kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2G8008GQ - Retail -- Item #: N82E16820227290 $93.99
  • NORCO RPC-230 2U Rackmount Server Case - Retail -- Item #: N82E16811219032 $59.99
  • SeaSonic SS-400ES 400W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.91 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply --Item #: N82E16817151039 $53.99

The NIC on the motherboard works.

I built a similar system some months ago and installed ESXi 3.5. That was difficult. Had to follow the instructions on this site to get the hard drive recognized. The ESXi 4 install on the above system was the opposite. Download and burn the iso. Set the hard drive to IDE mode in the bios (not AHCI - does not work!). While in the bios turn on VT mode. Boot and install without a problem. The hard drive is recognized straight off. Same with the NIC.

All the rest of the hardware listed worked will. If I were to do it over I would use a smaller power supply. The above supply has too many wire and was difficult to pack in the U2 case. Motherboard supports 8GB of RAM.
